Rwanda to celebrate World Water Day, 2012
World Water Day is celebrated every year on 22 March. The 2012 WWD marks the 20th World Water Day – an annual day declared by the United Nations that underscores water's importance in our daily lives and our future.
This international event aims to draw attention to the importance of fresh water and to encourage the sustainable management of water resources, by highlighting a particular aspect of water. The theme chosen for 2012, “Water and food security”, seeks to further explore these two closely-related concepts, and the lack of which is causing severe crisis in increasingly more areas across the world.
According to the UN, food security exists when anyone can satisfy their dietetic needs in order to have an active and healthy life; and water is one of the fundamental factors for food production.
The UN highlights that this problem can be better understood when you realize that between 2,500 and 5,000 litres of water are required to produce the food that one person needs each day and, at present, this quantity is not guaranteed.
At national level on 22nd March 2012, the world Water Day will, as is done annually be celebrated with the collaboration of various key Ministries involved in Water and Food security. Those will include among others MINIRENA, MININFRA, MINAGRI and MINALOC.
Throughout the whole week starting from 19th to 23rd March,2012 there will be conducted different activities aiming at creating awareness and involving private sector and civil society on sustainable management of water resources, launching some projects that are related to water, and discussions on Water Resources policy and Water Law.
In response of the 2012 theme:” Water and food security” all Rwandans are encouraged to actively respond to sustainable management of water resources by using water more efficiently and help preserve water supplies for future generations.
