In line with the management, protection and restoration of country’s ecosystems and forests and ensuring that Rwanda’s economic growth is based on rational use of resources, from 2008 up to now, PAREF project is actively participating in making Rwandan Forestry Sector one of the pillars of the National Economy and ecological viability, said Habimana Claudien, PAREF project coordinator.
“The Afforestation Support offered by PAREF is aiming at the National Forest Policy and contributes to the poverty reduction, economic growth and environment protection” Habimana said
He added that reforestation activities which are taking place in different parts of Rwanda are on a productive move.
He mentioned the example of Gishwati forest where about 1200 Ha reforestated as a means of curbing huge loss of forests biodiversity and controlling soil erosion, flooding and landslides.
Apart from increasing forests cover, Habimana Claudien added that PAREF project is helping people in generating money through the Labour Intensive Work in which the beneficiaries can get job and experience in various activities related to tree planting and forests stands management.
On the private lands, PAREF advises and supports the owners in choosing tree species, producing tree seedlings, planting trees and maintaining plantations.
Bonaventure Nkundabanyanga, one of the beneficiaries of this project, said that before the coming of the Afforestation Support Project(PAREF), people were not aware of the role of forests. However today they know that if there is no increase in forests cover at the end of the day there will be lack of rain and other problems caused by climate change.
In his own words Nkundabanyanga said:” we were ignorant about the role of trees. After the coming of PAREF, we know so many about forests and their importance in our daily life like conditioning the air, contributing to the National Economy, fighting against climate change and so on”.
Nyirabayoke Francoise, residence of Rubavu Districts, Kanama sector said that since the coming of PAREF up to now she is generating money that helps her to solve some of the problems
“I can now afford to pay medical insurance and fees for the constructions of new classrooms for the nine year basic education” she said
